The expectation of employers and professional associations is that ITPs employed as professionals in the engineering sector meet at least a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7. An overview of the CLB components and levels can be found on the CLB web site. Click the link to the PDF file to download the full CLB level descriptions and detailed requirements.
While almost all regional Immigrant Service Agencies in BC (and elsewhere in Canada) offer ESL support, there are only a few resources for ITPs to find help in adjusting to an engineering/technology-related workplace, ranging from common business practices to technical jargon. ASTTBC is currently working with VCC to develop an ESL course for people who are considering becoming Fire Protection Technicians. This is an available occupation for qualified people with training in almost any field of Engineering and would be a very useful ‘first job’.
